Tess McCabe is a graphic designer and publisher living and working in Melbourne's inner north.
Her artwork explores themes of home, place, memory, the environment and social history.
Always intrigued by architecture and how built structures interact with and overtake natural environments, Tess applies a graphic mentality to landscape painting.
A recent foray into collage is heavily influenced by making work from non-new materials. Tess' collages are made from discarded paper products such as magazines, books, marketing collateral, notices, direct mail, gift wrap and packaging, brought together with precision and a designer's eye for colour and layout, culminating in a powerful assemblage of detailed and juxtaposing elements.
Tess uses the process of assembly to combat an underlying dread in regard to environmental exploitation, overconsumption, and our addiction to convenience – while applying an appreciation of the planet on which we are alive at this place and time to experience. Applying structure to commandeer omnipresent chaos and existential angst, her recyclable, degradable works invite you to look closer at the details within, and think more deeply about the individual choices you make in the face of myriad human challenges.
